  1. I need a good diabetic meal plan?

    September 4, 2010, 5:05 am
Hi, My doctor said I need to start planning my meals better I am 16 years old, male and type 1 diabetic. He limited me to 2500 calories a day, because I'm verry small and he said he gave me the extra 500 to grow more. I'm reading a little meal planning sheet he gave me today and it says that it's much better to have a custom meal plan for more freedom and such. I really couldn't care what I have to eat, my blood sugars are ranging from 550-600 all day long, it's never been good, Ive been diabetic for 4 years and it's never changed, he really scarred me today when he told me I wasn't gonna live to see my 20's, and if I did I'd be on dialasys and be blind. All I ask is that I get a good portion of every part of the food pyramid in everyday. Help is greatly greatly appreciated, thank you.

I am trying to control my sugar level with diet and exercise but I am finding it so hard to stay consistent. I am trying to follow the prescribed nutrition plan set out at my diabetics education class at Life Center. Do you have any suggestions for keeping on task? I used to skip breakfast and now have to force myself to eat. Most of the time I find it hard to eat three meals and 3 snacks each day never mind on a set schedule. My AC1 was above 10 and I am supposed to get it below 6 in three months. I need suggestions. I don't want to have to go on meds. I mainly think that I need some encouraging words from fellow diabetics on this issue. Help.

  8. Fun ways to teach diabetes to children?

    August 30, 2010, 12:08 am
does anyone know of fun ways to teach diabetes (specifically exchange list food/intake of good foods) to a 5 year old? we have an assignment tomorrow and i'm not sure if i can come up with fun simple ways to teach such a young child- since the parents do most of the planning. i was thinking about printing some pictures or bringing in some fake food, but it is a hard subject to teach to such a young kid! thanks! :) I understand, Cammie, what you mean but unfortunately the Nursing program doesn't care about system overload. My goal is to "teach a 5 year old about the diabetic exchange system." and I have no idea how you are supposed to teach that kind of information to a young child- the parents are the ones who prepare the food but i have to make it interesting for a kid. There really isn't much i can teach other than to follow the dietitian's guidelines because i don't know the specifications of the caloric intake, therefore i cannot formulate a plan... but rather explain the general idea. BOO this is boring! lol I decided to print out "good or bad" food pictures and have the kid pick based on the information i tell him. i just don't know how they expect a young child to take control like that. i appreciate everyone's input! thank you for taking the time to help me out :)
